Ellen Gould White über: "Egw about dessert"
Answer
Ellen G. White recommends largely abstaining from sweet desserts, as they can burden digestion and impair mental clarity. Often dessert is eaten even though the stomach is already full, leading to a health‑damaging overload. The best alternative for a dessert is simple fruit, while complex mixtures of milk, eggs, and a lot of sugar should be avoided.
Dangers and Advice Regarding Dessert
544. Desserts in the form of egg pudding can cause more harm than good. Fruit, when available, is the best food.
550. The dessert should be placed on the table and served together with the other foods; for often the dessert is only served after the stomach has already received everything it needs, and then it is precisely the decisive extra piece.
554. It is better to leave sweet things untouched. Leave the sweet desserts that are placed on the table alone. You do not need them. You need a clear mind to think according to God's order.
545. Usually far too much sugar is used in food. Cakes, sweet puddings, pastries, jellies and jams are frequent causes of digestive disturbances. Especially harmful are egg puddings and puddings whose main ingredients are milk, eggs, and sugar. The abundant use of milk and sugar together should be avoided.
547. A simple, plain fruit cake may serve as a dessert; but if one eats two or three pieces merely to satisfy an unrestrained appetite, one renders oneself unfit for God's service. ... Whoever does this has never trained themselves in self‑denial.
551. ... I reject pastries. These mixtures are unhealthy; no one can have good digestive power and a clear brain who eats large amounts of sweet cookies, cream cakes, and all kinds of cakes... I would prefer a meat diet over the commonly used sweet cakes and baked goods.
