Die Schriften machen deutlich, dass Jesu Opfer am Kreuz für alle Menschen gilt – nicht nur für die Erlösten. Christus „wurde zur Sünde für die Menschheit" und machte sich durch sein Leben für jeden Einzelnen verantwortlich; gleichzeitig bleibt die Anwendung dieses Opfers an die Bedingung der Reue und des Glaubens gebunden. Wer seine Schuld nicht bereut und das Sühneopfer nicht annimmt, muss die Strafe der Sünde selbst tragen – obwohl Christus bereits die gesamte Schuldlast auf sich genommen hat.

»Christ the sinless became sin for man. He bore the guilt of transgression, and the hiding of his Father's face, until his heart was broken and his life crushed out... And every soul that refuses to become a partaker of the atonement provided at such a cost, must bear, in his own person, the guilt and punishment of transgression.«
