Adventistische Schriften über: "When was the Southern Kingdom warned about the destruction of Jerusalem? Was it the case that the prophet Jeremiah predicted the destruction by the Babylonians about 40 years in advance, or did the minor prophets warn about it earlier?"
Answer
Jeremiah indeed warned the people of Israel over a period of 40 years about the impending destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. However, he was not the only warner; Jeremiah himself referred to earlier prophets such as Hosea, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah, who had already proclaimed similar messages of judgment. Even prophecies from around 785 B.C. already pointed to these events, which were ultimately fulfilled about 200 years later by Nebuchadnezzar.
Jeremiah's Forty-Year Ministry and the Prophets' Warnings
For forty years Jeremiah was to stand before the nation as a witness for truth and righteousness... He was to foretell the downfall of the house of David and the destruction of the beautiful temple built by Solomon... despised, hated and rejected by the people, he would finally experience the literal fulfillment of his own prophecies concerning the impending disaster.
Jeremiah earnestly pleaded with the priests and the people, in the presence of all, to submit to the king of Babylon for the time appointed by the Lord. He referred the men of Judah to the prophecies of Hosea, Habakkuk, Zephaniah and others, whose messages of rebuke and warning were similar to his own.
This prediction was made around 785 B.C. It was partially fulfilled about two hundred years later, when Jerusalem was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar. About this event Jeremiah, around 588 B.C., says the following: ...
In the fourth year of Jehoiakim's reign "the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the whole people of Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem" and pointed out that for twenty years, "from the thirteenth year of Josiah ... up to the present day," he had testified to God's desire to save, but his messages had been despised.
In the days of Josiah, the grandson of Manasseh, Jeremiah prophesied. Through this prophet God pleaded with Jerusalem to return to Him. "Behold, I will bring a people from afar over you, O house of Israel," says the Lord; "it is a mighty people, it is an ancient people..." Thus Babylon was described and Jerusalem's impending ruin was portrayed.
