What does Ellen White write about...

Adventistische Schriften über: "To what extent do prophetic writings contain the personal views of the author?"

Answer

Prophetic writings are a blend of divine activity and human individuality, with God inspiring the writer’s spirit but not erasing his personal manner of expression or character. While the messages are of divine origin, the selected words, illustrations, and the particular style reflect the author’s personal experiences, language, and spiritual abilities. Inspiration works upon the person himself, who, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, puts the received thoughts into his own human language.

The Connection of Divine and Human Work

»The writers of the Bible had to express their ideas in human language. It was written by human men. These men were inspired by the Holy Spirit. Because of the imperfection of human linguistic understanding or the corruption of the human mind... many read and understand the Bible as they please. ... The writers of the Bible were God’s penmen, not his pen. ... Inspiration does not act upon the words or expressions of the person, but upon the person himself, who is filled with thoughts under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Yet the words bear the stamp of the individual spirit.«

Individual Character and Human Limitations

»God is their author; but the writings were penned by human hands, and they bear traces of the individuality of the various writers. In every book of the Bible the stamp of the writer’s mind and character is recognizable. And that is exactly as God intended. ... He uses human tools and does not destroy the individuality of His servants. He places the Holy Spirit upon them... He presents to their spirit images and illustrations with which they are familiar, in order to make the truth understandable that He wishes them to convey.«

Thought Inspiration versus Word Inspiration

»Those who believe in thought‑inspiration understand the prophet as God’s ‘penman,’ not as His pen. God works through the thought processes of His messenger, inspiring the thoughts, but allowing the messenger, under the guidance of the Spirit, to choose the manner in which the thoughts are expressed. ... The fact that discrepancies can exist in the Bible and that at times there may be no ‘perfect order or apparent unity’ led her [Ellen White] to conclude: ‘All errors will not trouble any soul… that would not construct difficulties from the clearest revealed truth.’«

Limitations Due to Human Upbringing and DNA

»Jesus was born as a Jew, not as an African or a Norwegian. ... Humanly speaking, He was limited by the DNA of His genetic background. Nevertheless He revealed the word of God. ... The Bible, as we know it today, was written by limited people who differed greatly in rank, occupation, and in spiritual and prophetic gifts. ... Each writer captured those points that harmonized with his experience or his capacity for perception.«

Why I built EGW Vision

Hello, I am Stephan Krol. I started this Ellen White website to make the writings of Ellen G. White and the Adventist pioneers easier to access for everyone.

EGW Vision helps you find topics, statements, and quotes faster, especially when many original sources are not yet fully available in your language. The tool searches semantically, groups relevant content by topic, and presents matching results as clearly as possible in your language.

My hope is that this tool supports personal Bible study, strengthens trust in the original sources, and helps more people discover the message of these writings with clarity, depth, and joy.
