Adventistische Schriften über: "The significance of foot washing and the statement about the purity of the disciples"

Answer

The foot washing, according to Ellen White, has a far deeper meaning than mere physical cleansing. It symbolizes the purification of the heart from sin, pride, jealousy, and selfishness—a preparation for fellowship with Christ and the Lord's Supper. Jesus' statement “You are clean” referred to the disciples whose hearts were cleansed through this humble service, with the exception of Judas, who had not yielded himself to Christ.

The deeper meaning of foot washing

»These words mean more than physical cleanliness. Christ still speaks of the higher cleansing, as illustrated through the lower. One who came out of the bath was clean, but the shod feet soon became dusty and had to be washed again. Likewise, Peter and his brothers were washed in the great spring that was opened for sin and impurity. Christ recognized them as His own. Yet temptation had led them into evil, and they still needed His cleansing grace. When Jesus girded Himself with a towel to wash the dust from their feet, He intended by that very act to wash away alienation, jealousy, and pride from their hearts. This was of far greater significance than washing their dusty feet.«

Symbolism of the higher cleansing

»Solemnly Christ said to Peter: "If I do not wash you, you have no part in me." The service that Peter refused was the symbol of a higher cleansing. Christ had come to wash the heart from the stain of sin. By refusing to let Christ wash his feet, Peter rejected the higher cleansing that was contained in the lower.«

The disciples are clean – with one exception

»Jesus said to the disciples: "You are clean, but not all." He had washed Judas' feet, but his heart had not yielded to Him. It was not cleansed. Judas had not submitted to Christ.«

Instituting a holy ordinance

»Now, after He had washed the disciples' feet, He said: "I have given you an example, that you do as I have done to you." With these words Christ did not merely command the practice of hospitality. It meant more than washing the guests' feet to remove the dust of travel. Christ instituted here a religious service. Through the action of our Lord this humble ceremony became a consecrated ordinance.«

Preparation for the Lord's Supper

»This ordinance is the preparation appointed by Christ for the sacramental service. As long as pride, discord, and the striving for dominance are nurtured, the heart cannot enter into fellowship with Christ. We are not ready to receive the communion of His body and blood. Therefore Jesus instituted the remembrance of His humiliation as the first thing to be observed.«
