Adventistische Schriften über: "Significance of the abolition of the law of the commandments in statutes"
Answer
The “abolition of the law of the commandments in statutes” refers exclusively to the ceremonial law that God gave through Moses to the Israelite people. This law consisted of sacrifices, ritual services, and annual shadow Sabbaths that symbolically pointed to the sacrifice of Christ and His priesthood.
With Christ’s death on the cross, the pattern (the type) fulfilled its antitype, causing these ritual regulations to become obsolete and to be “nailed” to the cross. In contrast, the moral law, the Ten Commandments, remains eternally valid and unchanging, because it forms the basis of God’s government and is not among the abolished statutes.
Distinction between Moral and Ceremonial Law
»There is a law that was abolished, which Christ “removed from the way and nailed to His cross.” Paul calls it “the law of the commandments in statutes.” This ceremonial law, which God gave through Moses, with its sacrifices and ordinances, was to be binding for the Hebrews until the pattern, in Christ’s death as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, met its fulfillment. Then all sacrifices and services were to be abolished.«
The significance of the “nailing to the cross”
»We therefore conclude that the “handwriting of the statutes” that was nailed to Christ’s cross was the Levitical law. The ceremonies were types pointing to the sacrifice of Christ, and when that sacrifice was actually performed on the cross, the types ceased to exist at the same time.«
The moral law remains untouched
»Here the partition between Jews and Gentiles, called “enmity,” is explicitly defined as before as “the law of the commandments in statutes.” This, and only this, was abolished, while the Decalogue or the moral law remained in its original character and binding nature. This is the language of the entire Bible. There is no proof in any of these passages that the law of the Ten Commandments was abolished.«
Abolition of the Jewish church ordinances
»The law of the commandments contained in statutes was abolished so that the regulations of the Jewish church could make room for those of the Christian church. However, the Ten Commandments are contained in these two commandments [love God and love your neighbor] and are therefore inseparably taught.«
