The Significance of the Abomination and the Sign to Flee

Jesus announced to the listening disciples the judgments that would break upon apostate Israel... The Savior warned his followers: "When you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing at the holy place (whoever reads this, take note!), then those in Judea should flee to the mountains." If the idolatrous standards of the Romans were set up on the holy ground, which extended a few walking hours outside the city walls, then Christ’s followers should seek safety in flight. When the warning sign is seen, those who wish to escape should not hesitate.

Change of the Law and Idolatry

The prophecy had declared that the papacy would thereafter strive to "change times and law." To provide converts from paganism a substitute for the worship of idols... the veneration of images and relics was gradually introduced into Christian worship. A decree of a general council eventually confirmed this system of idolatry. To complete the sacrilegious work, Rome attempted to strike the second commandment, which forbids image worship, from God's law and to split the tenth commandment in order to preserve the number.
