Adventistische Schriften über: "Jesus "It is finished". What does that mean for the sanctuary?"
Answer
The cry “It is finished” marked the end of the earthly ceremonial service, because the true sacrifice, to which all shadow images pointed, had been offered. At that moment God tore the temple curtain from top to bottom, symbolizing that the earthly sanctuary had lost its holiness and God no longer accepted sacrifices there. From that point on the focus shifted to the heavenly sanctuary, where Jesus now serves as High Priest and intercessor with His own blood.
The End of the Earthly Sanctuary and the Beginning of the Heavenly Ministry
At the crucifixion, when Jesus died on Golgotha, He cried, “It is finished,” and the temple curtain was torn in two, from top to bottom. This was to show that the services of the earthly sanctuary were forever ended and that God would no longer meet with them in their earthly temple to receive their sacrifices. The blood of Jesus was then shed, which He Himself was to offer in the heavenly sanctuary.
The pattern met its antitype in the death of God's Son. The great sacrifice has been made. The way into the Most Holy Place has been opened. A new and living way has been prepared for all. [...] From now on the Redeemer should serve as priest and intercessor in the heavens of heaven.
Since the entire ritual order was symbolic of Christ, it had no value without Him. [...] With Christ’s execution the Jews effectively destroyed their temple. When Christ was crucified, the inner temple curtain was torn from top to bottom, meaning that the great final sacrifice had been made and that the system of offerings was forever ended.
With a ripping sound the inner temple curtain is torn from top to bottom by an invisible hand, revealing to the crowd a place that was once filled with the presence of God. [...] The Most Holy Place of the earthly sanctuary is no longer holy.
The shadow ceases when the substance comes: the pattern cannot go beyond the antitype; the offering of goats and calves was no longer useful once the great sacrifice for the world, Christ the Son of God, had died on Golgotha. Here is therefore the turning point.
When Jesus hung on the cross and cried, “It is finished,” the temple curtain was torn in two, from top to bottom, to indicate that God would no longer meet with the priests in the temple to receive their sacrifices and ordinances; and also to show that the dividing wall between Jews and Gentiles had been torn down.
