In these verses the Apostle Paul argues that the denial of the resurrection of the dead inevitably means that Christ also has not risen. If this were the case, the entire gospel would be meaningless, the faith of Christians completely worthless, and believers would remain trapped in their sins. The hope of a future life is therefore inseparably linked to the historical and actual resurrection of Jesus Christ as a guarantee for the resurrection of the righteous.
The Indispensability of Christ's Resurrection
»"Now, if Christ is preached as having risen from the dead, how then do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not risen; and if Christ has not risen, then our preaching is in vain, and your faith is also in vain." ... Here it is explained that denying the resurrection of the dead means denying the resurrection of Christ, which leaves the professing believers still in their sins; and therefore it undermines the gospel and Christ's salvation. This leads to another highly important conclusion, namely: If the dead do not rise, "then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost."«
Proof against the Immortality of the Soul
»The fact that David remains in the grave until the resurrection proves that the righteous do not go to heaven at death. Only through the resurrection and because Christ has risen can David finally sit at the right hand of God. And Paul said: "If the dead do not rise, then Christ also has not risen. But if Christ has not risen, then your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. So also those who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost." If the righteous had gone directly into heaven at death for four thousand years, how could Paul have said that they are "lost" if there is no resurrection?«
Faith and Baptism Lose Their Meaning Without Resurrection
»The apostle then describes the condition of the dead, assuming there is no resurrection... He proves the resurrection from their own faith and practice. Baptism for the dead refers to the death and resurrection of Christ, for which baptism is a symbol. ... If the dead do not rise, Christ has not risen; and if Christ has not risen, what good is it to be baptized in remembrance of his death and resurrection? In that case our faith is in vain.«
The Significance of Awakening from Sleep
»Observe: "If Christ is now preached as having risen from the dead [\"awakened\"], how then do some among you say that there is no resurrection [\"rising\"] of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not risen [\"awakened\"]; and if Christ has not risen [\"awakened\"], then our preaching is in vain, and your faith is also in vain. ... and if Christ has not been raised [\"awakened\"], then your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost." ... This repeated contrast between sleeping and awakening is striking.«
