What does Ellen White write about...

Adventistische Schriften über: "Why were the Israelites struck by a plague after eating meat in Numbers 11:33? Ellen White's explanation about lust, ingratitude, and rebellion."

Answer

The Israelites were struck by the plague because they rejected God's wise dietary restrictions and instead gave in to their corrupted cravings. Through their ungrateful rebellion and murmuring they despised the Lord and preferred their own pleasure over divine guidance. God eventually granted them their desire for meat, but left them to the physical and spiritual consequences of their unchecked selfishness.

The Consequences of Lust and Rebellion

»In this case the Lord gave the people what was not for their good because they insisted on having it. They would not submit to receive from the Lord the things that would be beneficial to them. They gave themselves to rebellious murmuring against Moses and against the Lord... Their corrupted desires dominated them, and God gave them meat as they wished, and He let them suffer the consequences of satisfying their lustful cravings. Burning fevers swept away a very large number of the people. Those who were most guilty through their murmuring were struck down as soon as they tasted the meat they had coveted.«

Satan's Strategy Through Appetite

»God could have supplied them just as easily with meat as with manna, but for their good a restriction was imposed on them. It was His intention to provide them with food that was better suited to their needs than the fever‑inducing fare many had become accustomed to in Egypt... Satan tried to get them to view this restriction as unjust and cruel. He prompted them to lust after forbidden things because he saw that unrestricted indulgence of appetite tends to produce sensuality, and the people could thus be more easily brought under his control.«

Ingratitude Toward the Heavenly Food

»They grew weary of the food that had been prepared for them by angels and sent down from heaven... Their twisted appetite demanded a greater variety, especially meat dishes. This murmuring soon infected almost the entire people. At first God did not fulfill their lustful desires, but let His provisions pass over them... Yet instead of humbling them, this seemed only to intensify their murmuring.«

The Punishment for Excess

»God gave the people what was not for their highest good because they persistently demanded it; they would not be satisfied with the things that had been provided for their benefit. Their rebellious wishes were fulfilled, but they were left to the consequences. They gorged without restraint, and their excesses were quickly punished. “The Lord struck the people with a very great plague.”«

Warning Against Disobedience

»Just as ancient Israel disregarded the light and could no longer see the need to restrain their appetite... the children of Israel wanted meat and said, as many say today: We will die without meat. God gave rebellious Israel meat, but His curse was attached to it. Thousands of them died while the meat they coveted was still between their teeth. We have the example of ancient Israel and a warning for us not to act as they did.«
