The camp of Judah was located on the east side of the Tabernacle because this was considered the most important place within Israel's camp arrangement. Judah led the first of the four large army camps and took the position directly in front of the entrance to the sanctuary.
The orientation toward the east also had a spiritual significance: worshippers, when entering the sanctuary, turned their backs on the sun. Since surrounding nations worshipped the sun in the east, this arrangement ensured that the people of Israel turned away from idolatrous influences to worship the true God.
The most important position in the east
»The eastern or most important camp was taken here by Judah, who bore the standard of the division. With Judah were Issachar and Zebulun... This was also the marching order: Judah with his division went ahead, followed by Reuben with his division, then the sanctuary with the Levites in the order of their encampment.«

»And the door of that sanctuary (also of the temple) was always oriented toward the east, so that all who wished to sacrifice to Jehovah and worship Him would turn their backs on the sun and its worship; and anyone who joined the worship of the sun had to first turn his back on Jehovah.«
