Paul was called an apostle because his calling came directly from Jesus Christ and God the Father – not from humans or through human mediation. He himself testified that he was “called to be an apostle by the will of God” and that his commission was received from the highest authority in heaven. This divine sending was later confirmed by the church through his formal ordination.

What an apostle is
»Since the gift of apostleship is one of the direct gifts of the Spirit of God, those who act in such a position must be appointed directly by the Lord and not simply by the voice of human wisdom.
