Adventistische Schriften über: "Why did the guest without wedding garments remain silent in Matthew 22:1-14?"

Answer

The guest fell silent because the wedding garment had been provided free of charge by the king himself, and he had no excuse for its absence. His appearance in his own clothing expressed a deliberate contempt for the king’s authority and his generous gift. Since he willfully rejected the garment— which symbolizes Christ’s righteousness— there was no justification for his behavior.

The Significance of the Wedding Garment

»Each guest was presented with a set of wedding garments. Therefore, if anyone had wanted to appear before this absolute ruler without the wedding garment, the sultan would have regarded it as an insult to his dignity and a disregard of his splendid gifts. Hence the question: \"Friend, how did you come here without a wedding robe?\" explains the guest’s speechless state. The wedding garment was provided, not at the cost of the guest but at the cost of the king. He only had to obey the requirements of the eastern state—put on the garment, appear before the king, and honor him with his rich attire. His refusal to comply with this proper custom, and the presumptuousness of still pressing himself into the king’s presence, was a declaration that he denied the king’s authority to rule over him and despised his power. Therefore he was bound hand and foot and cast out.«

The Rejection of Christ’s Grace

»The picture is drawn clearly in the Word of God of how He dealt with the man who accepted His invitation to the wedding but did not put on the wedding garment that had been purchased for him—the garment of Christ’s righteousness! He thought his own stained clothes were good enough to stand in Christ’s presence, but he was cast out as one who had offended his Lord and abused His gracious favor. My brother, your righteousness will not be sufficient. You must put on the garment of Christ’s righteousness. You must be like Christ.«

Speechless Before the Coming Judgment

»He has provided for you the garment in which He expects you to appear, namely the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ, for all and to all who believe; for all as a gift and for all as a covering. ... I urge you to consider in due time the judgment rendered on the guest whom the king found without a wedding garment; however self‑satisfied you may be now, before Him who is coming you will be speechless, and the most terrifying sound that will ever vibrate in your ear will be the words: \"Bind his hands and feet and take him away.\«
