Answer
The Emmaus disciples did not recognize Jesus at first because their faith was clouded by unbelief and God kept their eyes back in a supernatural way. Jesus wanted their faith not to rest only on his personal appearance, but to be firmly rooted in the prophecies of the Old Testament. It was only at the dinner, when he blessed the bread in his customary way and they saw the nail marks on his hands, that their eyes were opened.
Strengthening Faith through the Scriptures
Christ himself approached, unrecognized by his grieving disciples. Their faith had died with their Lord, and their eyes, blinded by unbelief, did not recognize the risen Savior... Had they known these [the Scriptures], they would have understood His life, His suffering, His death, and His resurrection.
It was His intention to illuminate their understanding and to firmly ground their faith on the “sure word of prophecy.” He wanted the truth to be firmly rooted in their spirit, not only because it was supported by His personal testimony, but because of the undeniable evidence through the symbols and shadows of the Law and the prophecies of the Old Testament.
The Supernatural Veiling
The simple meaning of these two passages from the Gospel of Luke is that Christ initially did not allow them to recognize Him, or, to borrow Mrs. White’s language, His “hand was over them and concealed” from them the truth that the “stranger” was none other than Christ.
The Moment of Recognition
Now He stretches out His hands to bless the food. The disciples recoil in amazement. Their companion spreads His hands in exactly the same way as their Master used to do. They look again, and behold, they see the nail marks in His hands. Both shout at once: It is the Lord Jesus! He has risen from the dead!
