Adventistische Schriften über: "Why did the angel wrestle with Jacob?"

Answer

Jacob wrestled with the angel because he was in a deep life crisis and desperately sought the assurance that his sins were forgiven. In the darkness he initially regarded the unknown as an enemy, but when he realized that it was the "Angel of the Covenant" (Christ), he held onto him in faith to plead for a divine blessing and protection from his approaching brother Esau.

The struggle served to transform Jacob’s character and test his faith, leading him from human self‑reliance to complete self‑surrender and trust in God’s promises. By his persistent holding despite physical weakness, he did not win by physical strength but by repentance and faithful perseverance.

Jacob’s Struggle for Character Change and Forgiveness

»In the great crisis of his life Jacob withdrew to pray. He was filled with an all‑controlling purpose—to seek a change of character. Yet while he prayed to God, what he thought was an enemy laid his hand upon him, and he wrestled for his life all night. [...] When his strength was nearly exhausted, the angel employed His divine power, and at His touch Jacob recognized the One with whom he had struggled. Wounded and helpless he fell upon the Savior’s breast and pleaded for a blessing. [...] What Jacob had striven for in vain by his own power was gained through self‑surrender and steadfast faith.«

The Angel Holds Jacob’s Sins Before Him

»All night Jacob wrestled with the angel and pleaded for a blessing. The angel seemed to oppose his prayer by constantly recalling his sins to him while also trying to pull away from him. Jacob was determined to hold the angel, not only with physical strength but by the power of living faith. [...] He did not let go of the angel until He blessed him. [...] Jacob held the angel until he received the blessing he desired and the assurance of forgiveness of his sins.«

Realization of One’s Own Helplessness

»Suddenly a strong hand was laid upon him. He thought an enemy was seeking his life, and he tried to wrench himself from his attacker’s grip. [...] While he fought for his life, the feeling of his guilt pressed upon his soul; his sins rose before him to exclude him from God. But in his dreadful distress he recalled God’s promises, and his whole heart cried out for His grace. [...] The patriarch now recognized the character of his opponent. He knew he had been in conflict with a heavenly messenger, and that was why his almost superhuman effort had not achieved victory. It was Christ, the "Angel of the Covenant," who had revealed Himself to Jacob.«

Victory Through Humility and Repentance

»Through humility, repentance, and self‑surrender this sinful, wandering mortal triumphed before the Majesty of Heaven. He had clung with a trembling grip to God’s promises, and the heart of infinite love could not reject the sinner’s plea. As proof of his triumph [...] his name was changed by one who had recalled his sin into one that recalled his victory.«

Why I built EGW Vision

Hello, I am Stephan Krol. I started this Ellen White website to make the writings of Ellen G. White and the Adventist pioneers easier to access for everyone.

EGW Vision helps you find topics, statements, and quotes faster, especially when many original sources are not yet fully available in your language. The tool searches semantically, groups relevant content by topic, and presents matching results as clearly as possible in your language.

My hope is that this tool supports personal Bible study, strengthens trust in the original sources, and helps more people discover the message of these writings with clarity, depth, and joy.
