Adventistische Schriften über: "Who was Paul?"
Answer
Paul was originally an eager defender of the Jewish faith and a tireless persecutor of the early Christians, until he was converted through a wonderful encounter with Jesus Christ. After his conversion he devoted his life as a “chosen instrument” to the service of the Gentiles, tirelessly proclaiming the gospel, founding churches, and writing numerous epistles. He was distinguished by extraordinary scholarship, eloquence, and an unwavering loyalty to Christ, which led him before kings and great assemblies.
From Persecutor to Apostle of Christ
Paul had previously been known as an eager defender of the Jewish religion and a tireless persecutor of the followers of Jesus. Bold, independent, persistent – his talents and education would have enabled him to serve in almost any capacity. He could argue with extraordinary clarity... And now the Jews saw this young man of unusual promise united with those he had once persecuted, preaching fearlessly in the name of Jesus.
A Chosen Instrument for the Gentiles
Jesus, whose name he had hated and despised above all others, revealed himself to Paul for the purpose of halting his frantic, though sincere, career, so that He could make this highly unpromising instrument into a chosen vessel to carry the gospel to the Gentiles.
Unremitting Service and Mission
From city to city, from country to country he traveled, telling the story of the cross, gaining converts for the gospel and founding churches. He constantly cared for these churches and wrote many instructional letters to them. At times he worked in his trade to earn his daily bread. But amid all the busy activities of his life Paul never lost sight of the one great goal – to strive toward the reward of his calling.
Scholarship and Eloquence
The fact was that Paul was a man of great scholarship, and his wisdom and demeanor enchanted his listeners. Learned men were delighted by his knowledge, and many of them came to believe in Jesus. When he stood before kings and great assemblies, he exuded such eloquence that it fascinated all who heard him.
Steadfastness in Persecution
During his long ministry Paul never wavered in his loyalty to his Savior. Wherever he was – whether before dark‑glancing Pharisees or Roman authorities; before the angry mob in Lystra or the converted sinners in the Macedonian prison... he never shamed himself for the cause he championed.
Divine Calling and Authority
He declared himself an apostle, “not from men, nor by a man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead.” Not from men, but from the highest authority in heaven he received his commission.
