Ellen White received a vision already in April 1847 in which she saw that the Sabbath would be the decisive test question at the end of time. She later confirmed in her writings that many decades earlier – around 1848/1849 – she had been shown that the observance of Sunday would be enforced by a Sunday law. In the 1880s her warnings intensified as a concrete threat of national Sunday laws emerged in the United States.
