The glory of the Lord is primarily understood as the character of God, which is marked by grace, mercy, love, and truth. This glory is not merely external splendor, but is most clearly manifested in the self‑sacrificial love of Jesus Christ and His redemptive work on the cross. When believers look upon Christ and reflect His character, God is glorified in them.
God's glory as His character
»What is the glory of the Lord? Moses prayed, “I ask you, let me see your glory.” And the Lord said, “I will let all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim the name of the Lord before you...” God’s glory is His character, and it is manifested to us in Christ. Therefore we are transformed into his likeness by looking at Christ, by contemplating His character, by learning His lessons, and by obeying His words.«
The glory of self‑sacrificial love
»It will become clear that the glory that shines in the face of Jesus is the glory of self‑sacrificial love. In the light of Golgotha one will see that the law of self‑denying love is the law of life for earth and heaven; that love which “does not seek its own,” has its origin in the heart of God.«
