Adventistische Schriften über: "What happened on Mount Sinai"
Answer
On Mount Sinai God revealed Himself to His people Israel in a terrifying display of His glory with thunder, lightning, and a dense cloud. He proclaimed there with His own voice the Ten Commandments and made a solemn covenant with the people, to organize them as a holy nation under His rule. While Moses stayed on the mountain for forty days for further instruction, the people, however, fell into idolatry by worshiping a golden calf.
The Majestic Descent at Sinai
»\"And it happened on the third day in the morning, there was thunder and lightning and a dense cloud on the mountain and the sound of a trumpet, exceedingly loud; so that the whole people who were in the camp trembled. And Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God... And the whole Mount Sinai smoked, because the Lord came down upon it in fire: and its smoke rose like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain shook mightily.\" This was the condition of Mount Sinai when God from it spoke \"true laws, good statutes, and commandments\".«
Organization as Church and Nation
»Here Israel was to receive the most wonderful revelation that God has ever given to humanity. The Lord had gathered His people here to imprint upon them the holiness of His requirements, by proclaiming His holy law with His own voice... Israel was now to be taken into a close and special relationship with the Highest—to be organized as a church and nation under God's government. \"If you truly obey my voice and keep my covenant, then you shall be my special possession before all nations.\«
God's Purpose in Legislation
»Therefore the Lord, when He led them out of Egypt, came down on Sinai, clothed in glory and surrounded by His angels, and spoke His law in terrifying majesty before the ears of the whole people. He did not entrust His regulations even to the memory of a people who tended to forget His requirements, but wrote them on stone tablets... Moses was commanded, as God instructed him, to write judgments and laws that gave precise instructions about what was required.«
The Confirmation of the Covenant
»Three days later the Lord spoke His law before the entire assembly, and again the people promised that they would obey... \"And Moses wrote all the words of the Lord\" and the people's promise in a book and read it to the whole assembly... \"and said: Behold, the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you because of all these words.\" This was the first ratified covenant: The people repeatedly promised to keep God's law, and God promised that He would make them His special possession.«
Apostasy and Idolatry at the Foot of the Mountain
»While Moses was on the mountain with God for forty days, Satan was busy stirring up doubt, apostasy, and rebellion. While God wrote His law to hand it over to His covenant people, the Israelites denied their loyalty to Jehovah and demanded gods of gold! When Moses came out of the terrifying presence of the divine glory... he found them kneeling in open contempt of His commands before a golden image.«
