Adventistische Schriften über: "What does it mean to be transformed into the image of Jesus? How does this transformation by God's grace practically appear in your life?"

Answer

Being transformed into the image of Jesus means that the Holy Spirit reshapes our character so that we reflect Christ's nature like a mirror. This change is practically accomplished by “looking” at Jesus in the Word of God, whereby we unconsciously adopt his habits, his meekness, and his obedience. Since we cannot bring about this transformation by our own strength, it manifests in daily life through the submission of our will to Christ's will and the bearing of the cross in discipleship.

The Transforming Power of Looking

It is not possible for any of us to effect this change in ourselves by our own power or efforts. It is the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, whom Jesus said He would send into the world, who transforms our character into the image of Christ; and when this is accomplished, we reflect the Lord’s glory as in a mirror. That is, the character of one who looks upon Christ becomes so similar to His that a person who sees him sees Christ’s own character shining forth like from a mirror.

Growth Through Studying the Example

By exploring the written Word we are able to observe the divine model precisely. When one becomes familiar with the history of the Redeemer, one discovers serious character flaws in oneself; the dissimilarity to Christ is so great that one recognizes the need for radical changes in life. Yet one continues to study with the desire to become like the great example. One grasps the gaze, the spirit of the beloved Master; through looking—“as we look upon Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith”— one is transformed into the same image.

Practical Implications in Daily Life

To a purified heart, everything appears changed. The transformation of character is the testimony to the world of an indwelling Christ. The Spirit of God brings forth a new life in the soul by bringing thoughts and desires into obedience to Christ’s will; and the inner person is renewed after the image of God. Weak and erring men and women show the world that the redeeming power of grace can cause the flawed character to develop into symmetry and abundant fruitfulness.

Self-Denial and Daily Discipleship

By studying the character of Christ revealed in the Bible and practicing His virtues, the believer is transformed into the same image of goodness and mercy. Christ’s work of self-denial and sacrifice, integrated into daily life, will develop a faith that works through love and purifies the soul. Many wish to avoid the part of bearing the cross, but the Lord speaks to all when He says, “If anyone would follow Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.”
