Ellen White recommends keeping public prayers short and to the point so that they do not weary the listeners. She considers a few minutes sufficient; she describes fifteen minutes or longer as too long. In private prayer, however, anyone may pray as long and as extensively as they wish. She also recommends a short, focused prayer during family worship.
Public Prayers
»Half an hour or even a quarter of an hour is much too long. A few minutes are enough to present your concerns to God and tell Him what you desire; in this way you can engage the people without wearying them and diminishing their interest in devotion and prayer.«
Private Prayer
»In private prayer, all have the privilege of praying as long as they wish and being as detailed as they please. They may pray for all their relatives and friends. The quiet chamber is the place to speak of all personal difficulties, trials, and temptations.«
Prayer in Family Worship
»At least a few verses of a lively song may be sung, and the prayer should be short and focused. The one leading the prayer should not pray about everything, but express their concerns in simple words and praise God with thanksgiving.«
