Ellen White makes clear that in the resurrection there will be no earthly marriages, because the redeemed will then be like the angels of God. Nevertheless, Christian marriage on earth is a holy symbol of the eternal union between Christ and His church. While the physical institution of marriage ends, the true love and harmony in a happy marriage serves as a foretaste of heaven.
No Marriage in Eternity
In answering their questions, Jesus lifted the veil concerning the future life. “In the resurrection,” He said, “they neither marry nor are married, but they are like the angels of God in heaven.” He showed that the Sadducees were wrong in their belief. Their assumptions were incorrect.
Marriage as a Foretaste of Heaven
The warmth of true friendship and the love that binds the hearts of husband and wife are a foretaste of heaven. God has ordained that among those who enter into the marital relationship, perfect love and perfect harmony should prevail.
Marriage as a Symbol of the Heavenly Family
God ordained that man and woman should be united in the holy state of marriage to establish families that, crowned with honor, would be symbols of the family in heaven... marriage, when it is associated with purity and holiness, truth and righteousness, is one of the greatest blessings ever given to the human family.
The Lamb's Wedding Feast
Both in the Old and New Testament, the marital relationship is used to depict the tender and holy union that exists between Christ and His people. For Jesus, the joy of the wedding celebrations foreshadowed the jubilation of the day when He will bring His bride home into the Father's house.
Preparation for the Higher Life
They will feel under the most solemn obligation to shape their characters so that they do good in their lives... and ultimately be made fit for the higher life, the better world, to shine forever in the presence of God and the Lamb.
