Ellen White explains that the destruction of the lawless (or the wicked) on the day of Christ’s second coming occurs through the mere manifestation of His glory. Because the wicked live a sinful life in complete disharmony with God, the revelation of His glory acts upon them like a consuming fire. At that moment they are destroyed by the “spirit of His mouth” and the “glory of His appearance,” while God’s faithful people are preserved.

Like ancient Israel, the wicked destroy themselves; they fall by their own wrongdoing. Through a life of sin they have placed themselves so far out of harmony with God, their nature has been so degraded by evil that the revelation of His glory is a consuming fire for them.«
