Overcoming sin is an active process of heart testing and self‑denial, in which the believer must lay aside all selfishness. True overcomers are those who love God above all and love their neighbors as themselves, with acts of love for others being a sign of a life that is "hidden with Christ in God." Whoever acts without love or selfishly endangers their place in the Book of Life, because character is judged by the standard of love.
The condition to be an overcomer
»Whoever overcomes will be clothed with white garments; and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life, but I will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels. ... If we want to be overcomers, we must examine our hearts to be sure that we harbor nothing that is offensive to God. If we do this, we can wear the white garment promised here. If we wish to stand before God in the white linen, which is the righteousness of the saints, we must now do the work of overcoming. ... Who separates sin and selfishness from themselves? ... Whose names will not be blotted out of the Book of Life? Only the names of those who have loved God with all their strength and loved their neighbor as themselves.«
Overcoming selfishness through service to the neighbor
»The love of this world has closed their hearts to compassion and consideration of the needs of others. It is the religion of Christ that they need... Christ did not please himself. He lived for the benefit of others. He lived to be of use to others. You have a work to do and should not waste time humbling your hearts before God and, through humble confessions, removing the stain from your Christian character. ... Then, when the self is dead and life with Christ is hidden in God, present the humble prayer. If you harbor injustice in your heart, the Lord will not hear you.«
Love as a remedy for the sins of others
»The love that suffers long and is kind will not inflate a thoughtlessness into an unforgivable offense, nor will it capitalize on the faults of others. Scripture clearly teaches that one should meet the erring with forbearance and consideration. When the right course is followed, the apparently hardened heart can be won for Christ. The love of Jesus covers a multitude of sins. His grace never leads to exposing another's mistakes, unless there is a compelling necessity.«
