Ellen Gould White über: "What does Ellen G. White say about the Laodicean message?"
Answer
According to Ellen G. White, the message to the church of Laodicea is a disturbing warning that directly applies to the people of God today. It describes a condition of spiritual self‑deception in which believers consider themselves rich and spiritually supplied, while in reality they are lukewarm, blind, and needy.
The purpose of this serious message is to shake the church out of its fleshly security, lead it to deep repentance, and prompt each individual to examine his own heart. Only through sincere conversion and the cleansing of sin can the way be prepared for the presence of Jesus and the later “loud clamor.”
Applying the Laodicean Message to the Present Age
»I was shown that the testimony to the Laodiceans is applicable to the people of God in the present time, and the reason it has not accomplished a greater work lies in the hardness of their hearts. Yet God has given the message time to accomplish its work. The heart must be cleansed of sins that Jesus has long excluded. This terrifying message will accomplish its work. ... It is intended to rouse the people of God, to bring their backsliding before them, and to lead them to eager repentance, so that they may be favored through the presence of Jesus and be prepared for the loud call of the third angel.«
The State of Lukewarm Self‑Deception
»The people of God are portrayed in the message to the Laodiceans as being in a state of fleshly security. They feel comfortable and believe they are in an exalted state of spiritual achievement. ... What greater deception can come upon the human mind than the confidence that one is right when one is completely wrong! The message of the True Witness finds the people of God in a sad deception, even though they are sincere in this deception. They do not know that their condition is lamentable in the eyes of God.«
The Duty of Preachers to Proclaim Clearly
»Preachers who proclaim the present truth should not neglect the solemn message to the Laodiceans. The testimony of the True Witness is not a smooth message. The Lord does not say to them: You are pretty much right; you have endured chastening and reproof that you never deserved... The True Witness explains that if you think you are in a good condition of flourishing, you actually lack everything you need.«
Warning Against Misapplication of the Message
»It was not the intention of the message that a brother sit in judgment over his brother, telling him what to do and how far to go; rather, that each individual examines his own heart and attends to his own work. It is the task of the angels to observe the development of character and weigh its moral value.«
