What does Ellen White write about...
Adventistische Schriften über: "What does Ellen G. White say about fasting?"
Answer
Ellen G. White presents fasting as a practice that can accompany prayer and help humble the heart and seek God’s wisdom. She recommends moderate and simple fasting: it does not always require complete abstinence from food, and it does not replace trust in the Word of God. She also teaches that the fast God accepts is expressed in concrete acts of mercy toward those in need.
Fasting combined with prayer
»For certain things, fasting and prayer are recommended and appropriate. In the hands of God, they are means of purifying the heart and promoting a receptive disposition. We receive answers to our prayers because we humble our souls before God.«
Moderation and trust in God
»The true fast that should be recommended to all is to abstain from all kinds of stimulating foods and to use properly the wholesome, simple foods that God has provided in abundance. […] Total abstinence from food may not be required, but they should eat sparingly of the simplest food. […] All the fasting in the world will not take the place of simple trust in the Word of God.«
The fast God accepts
»The fast that God can accept is described. It consists in sharing your bread with the hungry and bringing into your home the poor who have been cast out. You are to seek out those in need and bring them into your home; do not wait for them to come to you.«
Fasting in spiritual conflict
»To succeed in such a conflict, their faith had to be strengthened by fervent prayer, fasting, and humbling of the heart.«
