Adventistische Schriften über: "What difficulties and dangers can arise when dating a non‑believer from an Adventist perspective?"

Answer

From an Adventist perspective, a partnership with a non‑believing person carries the great danger of gradual spiritual decline, because fundamentally different life goals, values, and loyalties collide. The influence of the unbelieving partner often leads to religious principles being gradually compromised, worldly pleasures taking hold, and faith being displaced by doubt. Additionally, inevitable tensions arise in daily life, because spiritual duties and devotion to Christ are often perceived by the partner without spiritual discernment as neglect or are rejected.

Spiritual Decline and the Abandonment of Faith Principles

»Sometimes the argument is made that the unbeliever is well‑disposed toward religion and is everything one could wish for in a life partner, except one thing — he is not a Christian. Although the believer’s better judgment may suggest the inappropriateness of a lifelong connection with an unbeliever, in nine out of ten cases the inclination prevails. Spiritual decline begins the moment the vow is made at the altar; religious zeal is dampened, and one fortress after another is torn down ... The believer argues that in his new relationship he must concede something to his chosen companion. Social, worldly pleasures are supported. At first this occurs with great inner resistance, but interest in the truth diminishes, and faith is exchanged for doubt and unbelief.«

Incompatible Life Orientations and Serving Two Masters

»The happiness and flourishing of married life depend on the unity of the parties. How can the fleshly mindset harmonize with the mindset aligned with the sense of Christ? One sows to the flesh and thinks and acts according to the impulses of his own heart; the other sows to the spirit and seeks to suppress selfishness, overcome inclination, and live in obedience to the Master ... Thus there is a constant difference in taste, in inclinations, and in goals. If the believer does not win the unrepentant one through his steadfast adherence to principles, he will, which occurs far more often, become discouraged and sell his religious principles for the miserable companionship with someone who has no connection to heaven.«

Contrasting Life Paths and Lack of Spiritual Understanding

»Our faith convictions and principles are such that they lead in opposite directions. We cannot be happy together; for if I strive to attain a fuller understanding of God's will, I will become increasingly unlike the world and more like the image of Christ. If you continue to see no loveliness in Christ and no attraction in the truth, you will love the world that I cannot love, while I will love the things of God that you cannot love. Spiritual matters are judged spiritually. Without spiritual discernment you will not be able to recognize God's claims on me or understand my obligations to the Lord I serve; therefore you will feel that I neglect you because of religious duties.«

Influence on Faithfulness to God's Commandments

»No one who fears God can safely unite with someone who does not fear Him. “Can two walk together unless they are one with each other?” The happiness and flourishing of the marital relationship depend on the unity of the parties; yet between the believer and the unbeliever there is a radical difference in preferences, inclinations, and intentions. They serve two masters, between whom no harmony can exist. No matter how pure and correct a person's principles may be, the influence of an unbelieving companion will tend to lead away from God.«

Danger to Conscience and Personal Faith Practice

»Before taking a step that will affect the entire future life, I urge you to consider this matter carefully and in prayer. Will this new relationship be a source of true happiness? Will it be a help to you in the Christian life? Will it be pleasing to God? ... Will she be allowed to preserve her individuality, or must her judgment and conscience be subordinated to the control of her husband? As a follower of Christ she does not belong to herself; she has been dearly bought. Can she honor the claims of the Redeemer as the highest?«

Why I built EGW Vision

Hello, I am Stephan Krol. I started this Ellen White website to make the writings of Ellen G. White and the Adventist pioneers easier to access for everyone.

EGW Vision helps you find topics, statements, and quotes faster, especially when many original sources are not yet fully available in your language. The tool searches semantically, groups relevant content by topic, and presents matching results as clearly as possible in your language.

My hope is that this tool supports personal Bible study, strengthens trust in the original sources, and helps more people discover the message of these writings with clarity, depth, and joy.
