Ellen Gould White über: "What are the personal prerequisites for baptism?"
Answer
The personal prerequisites for baptism include a genuine conversion, repentance for sins, and faith in Christ as Savior. Candidates must be ready to fully renounce the world and sinful habits and to live their lives in obedience to God's commandments. Before receiving the sacrament, thorough instruction in biblical truths and the dedication of an undivided heart to God are necessary.
Thorough Preparation and Conversion
»The preparation for baptism is a matter that must be considered carefully. The newly converted to the truth should be faithfully instructed in the clear “Thus says the Lord.” ... All who enter the new life should, before their baptism, understand that the Lord requires undivided affection. ... Practicing the truth is essential. ... A thorough conversion to the truth is required. We should not merely say, “I believe,” but practice the truth.«
Dedication and Renunciation of the World
»Baptism is a most solemn renunciation of the world. Those who are baptized in the triple name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit publicly declare at the beginning of their Christian life that they have renounced the service of Satan and have become members of the royal family, children of the heavenly King. ... A more thorough preparation is needed on the part of baptismal candidates. They require a truer instruction than is usually given to them. ... Whenever someone renounces sin, which is a violation of the law, his life is brought into conformity with the law, in perfect obedience.«
Complete Surrender and Examination
»The test of discipleship is not applied as strictly to the applicants as it should be. It should be understood whether they merely adopt the name of Seventh-day Adventists or whether they take a stand on the Lord’s side to come out of the world and be set apart... Before baptism, a thorough examination of the candidates’ experience should take place. ... Educate them in what the fruit of conversion is, the proof that they love God. Show that true conversion is a change of heart, mind, and intention. Bad habits must be abandoned.«
Steps of Grace: Repentance and Faith
»He [Christ] fulfilled all of God’s requirements in repentance, faith, and baptism, the steps of grace in a genuine conversion. In His humanity Christ met the measure of the law’s requirements. ... Christ came to provide an example of perfect conformity with God’s law, which is required from Adam, the first man, to the last person who will live on earth.«
Importance of Heart Change
»Association with a congregation does not replace conversion. Placing one’s name under a church confession is of little value to anyone if the heart is not truly changed. ... Baptism recalls Christ’s resurrection and the candidate’s rebirth—the resurrection of Christ is celebrated as we are buried with Him through baptism and rise from the water grave in the likeness of His resurrection, to live in the newness of life.«
