The leaves of the Tree of Life on the new earth do not serve to heal physical diseases, because there will be no ailments there. Instead, they symbolize the complete removal of the “scars and wounds” that were caused by sin and the 6,000‑year history of conflict.
Healing also refers to the unification of peoples: the shared eating of the leaves and fruits brings all tribes and nations together in a common language and worship. Figuratively, the leaves already represent the promises of God’s Word today, which strengthen our character and provide spiritual life.
Healing from the consequences of sin
»The leaves of the tree served to heal the peoples" and "its leaf as medicine". All the war and strife among the nations arose because man did not eat from the fruit of the Tree of Life. The entire six‑thousand‑year conflict began when man ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. ... The "scars and wounds" caused by eating its fruit will be healed by the leaves of the Tree of Life.«
Service to the nations and eternal condition
»Its leaves serve the healing of the nations; literally the service of the nations. This cannot be understood to mean that anyone in a sick or deformed condition will come into the city to need healing; for then the conclusion would follow that there will always be persons in that condition there ... but the notion of disease and deformation in the immortal condition contradicts the explicit statements of other scriptures.«
Restoration of the community
»On the restored earth, all nationalities, all tribes and peoples will gather for the first time and worship our God with a common language. The fruit and the leaves of the Tree of Life bring everyone together. In the stream of life and the Tree of Life, together with the blessing that each is guaranteed, much of what was lost through the breach of sin will be restored.«
Spiritual significance of the leaves today
»So it is with all the promises of God’s Word. In them He speaks individually to us ... It is in these promises that Christ communicates His grace and power to us. They are leaves of that tree which “serves to heal the peoples”. Taken in and processed, they are to be the strength of character, the inspiration, and the nourishment of life.«
