Adventistische Schriften über: "What are the biblical foundations of marriage?"

Answer

The biblical foundation of marriage was laid already at creation by God, who instituted the Sabbath and marriage as two great gifts to humanity. Marriage is designed as a lifelong, holy union between a man and a woman, which in mutual love and unity honors God and is to be a symbol of the family in heaven. Jesus Christ affirmed this institution through His presence at the wedding at Cana and restored its original holiness.

The Institution of Marriage in Eden

»God, the Lord, formed man from the dust of the earth... And God, the Lord, said: It is not good that man should be alone; I will make a helper suitable for him... And God, the Lord caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam... and He took one of his ribs... and the rib... He made it into a woman and brought her to the man. And Adam said: This is now bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh... Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." The One who gave Eve to Adam as a helper performed His first miracle at a wedding feast. By His presence at this gathering our Savior sanctioned marriage and recognized it as an institution He Himself had instituted. At the beginning, when the Sabbath law was given, the marriage law was also given. At that time God gave man His two great gifts – the Sabbath as a day of rest and the woman as a helper.«

Marriage as a Symbol for Christ and the Church

»The family relationship should be sanctifying in its influence... The families here should be a symbol of the great family above. "Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the church... Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her... Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This is a great mystery." If this teaching were observed by those entering the marriage covenant, family life would be pure and lofty, protected by holy love. God created a woman from the man so that she would be his companion and helper, one with him, to delight, encourage, and bless him. And he, in turn, is to be her strong helper.«

Prerequisites for a Happy Marriage

»No one who fears God can safely unite with someone who does not fear Him. "Can two walk together unless they are united?" The happiness and flourishing of the marital relationship depend on the unity of the parties; but between the believer and the unbeliever there is a fundamental difference in taste, inclination, and purpose. They serve two masters, between whom there can be no harmony... The marriage of Christians to the ungodly is forbidden in the Bible. The Lord's instruction is: "Do not be yoked together with unbelievers.«

The Spiritual Nature of Marital Love

»Marriage has received Christ's approval and blessing and is to be regarded as a holy institution. True religion does not work against the Lord's plans. God ordained that the woman should be united with the man in holy marriage to establish families that would be crowned with honor and become symbols of the family in heaven... The divine love that proceeds from Christ never destroys human love, but embraces it, ennobles and purifies it. Through it, human love is elevated and ennobled. Human love can never bear its precious fruit until it is united with the divine nature and trained to grow upward toward heaven.«

Why I built EGW Vision

Hello, I am Stephan Krol. I started this Ellen White website to make the writings of Ellen G. White and the Adventist pioneers easier to access for everyone.

EGW Vision helps you find topics, statements, and quotes faster, especially when many original sources are not yet fully available in your language. The tool searches semantically, groups relevant content by topic, and presents matching results as clearly as possible in your language.

My hope is that this tool supports personal Bible study, strengthens trust in the original sources, and helps more people discover the message of these writings with clarity, depth, and joy.
