Job is described in the scriptures as a man of extraordinary piety and impeccable character, whose life was a testimony to true holiness. God Himself testified that there was no one on earth like him, for he was perfect, sincere, and God-fearing, and he shunned evil. His faith and his steadfastness in trials made him a worthy representative of God, whose character was refined through patient endurance like gold.
A Perfect and Upright Character
»Concerning Job, the patriarch of Uz, the testimony of the heart-scorcher was: “There is none like him on earth, an impeccable and upright man who fears God and shuns evil.” Against this man Satan brought the mocking accusation: “Does Job fear God in vain? Have you not drawn a fence around him and his house and everything he has on all sides? ... Stretch out your hand and touch everything he has;” “Touch his bones and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.”«
Job’s Steadfast Piety and Sanctification
»It is said of Job: “When the days of their feast tables had passed, Job sent them away and consecrated them, and he rose early in the morning and offered burnt offerings according to their entire number; for Job said: Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts. So Job always did this.” This is truly high praise. Yet the Holy Spirit was pleased to honor Job’s character in this way. His religion did not come in bursts... Job’s piety was as regular as the rising sun. So Job always did this.«
Testing and Refinement Like Gold
»“If He has tested me, I will emerge like gold.” ... So it also happened. Through his patient endurance he vindicated his own character and thereby the character of the One he represented. And “the Lord turned Job’s captivity: ... also the Lord gave Job double as much as he had previously... So the Lord blessed the later end of Job more than his beginning.”«
