This first beast represents the Roman Church, a religious structure endowed with civil power and possessing the authority to punish all dissenters. The image of the beast depicts another religious structure equipped with similar powers. Danger of the Union of Church and State

In the United States, the Episcopal clergy are heavily afflicted with Puseyism, which is nothing but a disguised papacy. Roman Catholics already number in the millions in the United States... They already boast loudly, demand large concessions from state governments, and have them granted.
