What does Ellen White write about...
Adventistische Schriften über: "they saw Jesus alone, scene in the Acts of the Apostles... where Peter and John stood before the High Council"
Answer
In the book “The Acts of the Apostles” (The Acts of the Apostles) the expression “Jesus alone” is used in connection with the Transfiguration of Christ to describe the mystery of the power of the early church. When Peter and John stood before the High Council, the Jewish leaders recognized from their bold demeanor that they had “been with Jesus.” This steadfastness and the fulfilled words of Jesus gave the disciples a power that silenced their opponents.
Jesus alone as the mystery of power
»Concerning the disciples after the Transfiguration of Christ it is written that at the end of that wonderful scene they “saw no one but Jesus alone.” “Jesus alone” – in these words is contained the mystery of life and power that characterized the history of the early church. When the disciples first heard the words of Christ, they felt their need for Him. They sought, they found, and they followed Him. They were with Him in the temple, at the table, on the hillside, in the field. They were like students with a teacher and received daily from Him lessons of eternal truth.«
The testimony before the High Council
»This bold defense horrified the Jewish leaders. They had assumed that the disciples would be overwhelmed by fear and confusion if they were brought before the High Council. But instead these witnesses spoke, as Christ had spoken, with a convincing power that silenced their opponents. In Peter’s voice there was no trace of fear as he declared about Christ: “This is the stone the builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.”«
Insight into fellowship with Jesus
»The people were amazed at the boldness of Peter and John. They recognized in them that they had been with Jesus; for their noble, fearless conduct was comparable to the appearance of Jesus when He was pursued by His murderers. Jesus rebuked Peter with a look of compassion and sorrow after he had denied Him, and now, as he boldly proclaimed his Lord, Peter was acknowledged and blessed. As a sign of Jesus’ approval he was filled with the Holy Spirit.«
Obedience to God rather than to men
»But regardless of their desire to destroy the disciples, the priests dared no more than to threaten them with the severest punishment if they continued to speak or act in Jesus’ name. They summoned them again before the High Council and ordered them not to speak or teach in Jesus’ name. But Peter and John replied: “Judge for yourselves whether it is right before God to obey you more than God. For we cannot refrain from speaking about what we have seen and heard.”«
