This motif comes from the Bible, from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 15, where Jesus tells the parables of the lost sheep, the lost drachma (in the house), and the prodigal son. It emphasizes that in the whole heaven and in the finder’s house there is great joy when a single lost person is saved and repents (Luke 15:7,10).
Joy in Heaven over a Saved Sinner
»I was directed to the parable of the lost sheep... When the lost sheep is found, the shepherd lifts it onto his shoulder and returns full of joy... Friends and neighbors are called to rejoice with the finder: “Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost sheep.” ... “I tell you: Likewise there will be joy in heaven over a sinner who repents, more than over ninety‑nine righteous who do not need repentance.” The lost silver coin is meant to represent the wandering, erring sinner... The Whole Heaven Resounds with Joy

What a holy ecstasy of joy is expressed in this parable!«
Joy before the Angels over Repentance and Salvation
