Adventistische Schriften über: "Theological evaluation of dancing in worship services"
Answer
The present writings evaluate dancing in worship critically and distinguish between various forms of dance. While David's dance in reverent joy before God is recognized as commendable, modern forms of dance are seen as associated with hedonism and estrangement from God and are rejected. A particular warning is given against emotionally charged worship forms featuring dance, loud music, and drums that are presented as works of the Holy Spirit—these are called the invention of Satan, which distracts from the pure truth.
Warning about dance and noise in worship services
»It is impossible to overestimate the work that the Lord will accomplish through His appointed vessels in carrying out His will and purpose. The things you described as happening in Indiana, the Lord has shown me, will occur shortly before the end of the grace period. Every coarse thing will be displayed. There will be shouting, with drums, music, and dancing. The senses of reasonable beings will be so confused that they cannot be trusted to make right decisions. And this is called the movement of the Holy Spirit.«
The Holy Spirit does not work in noise and dance
»The Holy Spirit never reveals Himself in such methods, in such noise. This is an invention of Satan to conceal his sophisticated methods, to render the pure, sincere, uplifting, ennobling, and sanctifying truth for this time ineffective. It is better never to associate worship with music, than to use musical instruments for the work that was shown to me last January and would be brought into our camp meetings. The truth for this time needs none of this kind in its work of converting souls.«
Difference between David's dance and modern dance
»David's dance in reverent joy before God has been cited by pleasure‑seekers to justify fashionable modern dance, but there is no reason for such an argument. In our time, dancing is associated with folly and midnight celebrations. Health and morality are sacrificed to pleasure. The music and dancing in joyful praise to God during the transport of the Ark of the Covenant bore no resemblance at all to the excesses of modern dance. The former served as a reminder of God and exalted His holy name. The latter is a device of Satan to cause people to forget God and to dishonor Him.«
No encouragement for this type of worship
»No encouragement should be given for this type of worship. The same kind of influence entered after the passing of the time in 1844. The same portrayals were made. People became excited and were acted upon by a power that was thought to be the power of God...«
