Adventistische Schriften über: "The whereabouts of the Ark of the Covenant at the destruction of the first temple"
Answer
Shortly before the destruction of the first temple by the Babylonians, god-fearing men hid the Ark of the Covenant in a cave to protect it from desecration by unholy hands. God had revealed to these faithful servants the fate of the temple and the impending captivity of Israel because of their sins. The Ark of the Covenant has not been disturbed since that time and remains to this day at its secret location.
The Hiding of the Ark before the Destruction
»Because Israel transgressed God's commandments and committed godless deeds, God allowed them to go into captivity to humble and punish them. Before the temple was destroyed, God revealed to some of His faithful servants the fate of the temple, which was the pride of Israel and which they regarded with idolatry while they sinned against God. He also revealed to them the captivity of Israel. These righteous men, shortly before the destruction of the temple, removed the holy Ark with the stone tablets and hid it with grief and sorrow in a cave, where it should remain hidden from the people of Israel because of their sins and should not be returned to them. This holy Ark is still hidden. It has not been disturbed since its concealment.«
Preservation from Unholy Hands
»Among the righteous who were still in Jerusalem and to whom the divine purpose had been made clear, there were some who were determined to keep the holy Ark, which contained the stone tablets with the regulations of the Decalogue, out of the reach of reckless hands. They did so. With grief and sorrow they hid the Ark in a cave, where it should remain hidden from the people of Israel and Judah because of their sins and should not be returned to them. This holy Ark is still hidden. It has not been disturbed since its concealment.«
The Role of the Prophet Jeremiah
»On the occasion of a battle with the Philistines, the godless sons of Eli, the high priest, carried the Ark onto the battlefield, and it was captured by the Philistines; but God impressed their hearts to return it to Israel with a golden sin offering. When Solomon's temple was built, the Ark was placed in the Most Holy Place, where it remained until it was taken by the Prophet Jeremiah and hidden in a cave in the mountains before the Babylonian captivity, so that it would not fall into the hands of the Gentiles.«
Reports from the Maccabees Books
»The prophet Jeremiah, “warned by God, commanded that the tabernacle and the Ark should go with him when he went out to the mountain where Moses had ascended and saw God's inheritance. And when Jeremiah came there, he found a hollow cave, in which he placed the tabernacle, the Ark, and the incense altar and sealed the door. And some of those who followed him came to mark the way, but they could not find it. When Jeremiah noticed this, he rebuked them and said: As for this place, it shall remain unknown until God gathers His people again and receives them in mercy.” 2 Maccabees 2:4-7. And from this last expression some have inferred that it will be discovered and brought forth before the end.«
