Offspring inherit the image of their parents and their fallen nature, yet God's original purpose remains to restore His image in the human soul. While Adam was created sinlessly in the likeness of God, his son Seth was born in Adam's fallen image, but at the same time received the knowledge of the Redeemer. True education and the grace of Christ aim to make this image of God, almost erased by sin, visible again in children.
Inheritance and Restoration of the Divine Image
Regarding the creation of Adam it says: “God created him in His own image”; but after the fall man begot “a son who was like him and after his image”. While Adam was created sinlessly in the likeness of God, Seth, like Cain, inherited the fallen nature of his parents. But he also received the knowledge of the Redeemer and instruction in righteousness.
The true aim of education is to restore the image of God in the soul. At the beginning God created man in His image. He equipped him with noble qualities... But the fall and its consequences have distorted these gifts. Sin has marred the image of God in man and almost erased it.
Through the grace of Christ given to them, the teacher can be the living human instrument... to cleanse the soul of its moral defilement; and the image of God is to be revealed in the child's soul, and the character is reshaped by the grace of Christ.
Has the Lord corrupted these youths? Oh, no! He created them in His image, a little lower than the angels. Who then performed the terrible work of shaping the life character? Who altered their character so that they no longer bear the seal of God...?
At the beginning man was created in the likeness of God, not only in character but also in form and features. Sin distorted and almost erased the divine image; but Christ came to restore the lost.
