Adventistische Schriften über: "The significance of love in 1 Corinthians 13"

Answer

The thirteenth chapter of the First Epistle to the Corinthians defines true, Christlike love as the essential element for obedience to God's commandments, since love is the fulfillment of the law. Without this love, all other gifts, talents, or deeds, such as eloquence or willingness to sacrifice, are worthless in God's eyes. This heavenly love is practically manifested in patience, kindness, selflessness, and the effort to build up others, and it remains as an imperishable treasure even in eternity.

An expression of obedience and daily source of strength

»Read this chapter every day and draw comfort and strength from it. Learn from it the value that God places on the sanctified, heaven-born love, and let the lesson it teaches reach your hearts. Learn that Christlike love is of heavenly origin and that without it all other qualifications are worthless. ... This chapter is an expression of the obedience of all who love God and keep His commandments. It is put into practice in the life of every true believer.«

Love as the fulfillment of the law

»If we understand that love, and love alone, is the fulfillment of the law, we can see in this chapter the statement that keeping the commandments means kindness, patience, selflessness, consideration for others, self-forgetfulness, and the work of building up others, gentleness, meekness, and true courtesy. In short, it means perfection. Without love in the heart there is no keeping of God's law.«

The value of love compared to human talents

»No matter how high the profession is, anyone whose heart is not filled with love for God and His fellow humans is not a true disciple of Christ. Even if he possessed great faith and the power to perform miracles, his faith would be worthless without love. He could show great generosity; but if he gave all his possessions to feed the poor from a motive other than genuine love, the act would not earn God's favor. In his zeal he might even die a martyr's death, but if he is not guided by love, God would regard him as a blinded enthusiast or an ambitious hypocrite.«

The transforming power of love in everyday life

»Let us bring the teaching from the thirteenth chapter of the First Epistle to the Corinthians into daily experience. Believers must bring a stronger love for one another and a growing interest in each other into their lives. The self must be surrendered to God before that strong, steadfast faith in the truth of life can take hold, encompassing the entire plan of redemption – its purpose of love and mercy, which uproots all hostility and petty differences from the heart and transforms indifference and coldness into Christlike affection.«

The imperishability of love

»This love "never fails." It can never lose its value; it is a heavenly attribute. As a precious treasure it will be carried by its owner through the gates of the city of God. "Now therefore abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.«
