Adventistische Schriften über: "The significance of baptism for the dead in 1 Corinthians 15:29"

Answer

The Adventist interpretation of 1 Corinthians 15:29 does not understand “baptism for the dead” as a substitute baptism for those already deceased, but as an expression of faith in the resurrection of the dead. Baptism is seen as a symbol of Christ’s burial and resurrection, whereby the believer expresses his hope that he too will be raised from the dead through Christ. Without belief in a future bodily resurrection, the symbolism of baptism would lose its true meaning.

The significance of baptism as an expression of faith in the resurrection

»Baptism for the dead. Most critics understand this as: “Immersion in faith in a resurrection of the dead.” ... Dr. Clarke says: “The sum of the apostle’s meaning seems to be this – they are baptized for the dead in full faith in the resurrection.” ... Dr. Geo Campbell: “What else should those who are baptized for the resurrection of the dead do if the dead do not rise at all? And why are they baptized for the resurrection of the dead?”«

The connection between baptism and the resurrection of Christ

»What connection does baptism have with the resurrection of the dead? – Exactly this: Through baptism we demonstrate our faith in Christ’s burial and resurrection. Just as Christ was buried in the tomb, the believer is buried in the water; and he will be raised from his temporary grave, as Christ was raised from the dead. Through this act he illustrates and manifests faith in these great events in Christ’s life. But if the dead do not rise, then Christ was not raised... Why then do we baptize “for the dead,” a dead person, a dead Savior?«

Warning against misinterpretations of the resurrection

»You believe that the dead have been raised. You have been baptized in the faith of the resurrection of the dead. I know that this is all a deception. Satan has tried to deceive you. When Christ, the great giver of life, comes in the clouds of heaven to awaken the dead, there will be a terrible earthquake. The trumpet of God will sound to the farthest reaches of the earth, and the voice of Jesus will call the dead from their graves to immortal life.«

Why I built EGW Vision

Hello, I am Stephan Krol. I started this Ellen White website to make the writings of Ellen G. White and the Adventist pioneers easier to access for everyone.

EGW Vision helps you find topics, statements, and quotes faster, especially when many original sources are not yet fully available in your language. The tool searches semantically, groups relevant content by topic, and presents matching results as clearly as possible in your language.

My hope is that this tool supports personal Bible study, strengthens trust in the original sources, and helps more people discover the message of these writings with clarity, depth, and joy.
