What does Ellen White write about...
Adventistische Schriften über: "The scene in John 2:14-16: When did the cleansing of the temple occur? It says "before the Passover". Could this mean several weeks or months earlier?"
Answer
The cleansing of the temple took place immediately at the beginning of Jesus' public ministry, when He traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover feast. The scriptures describe that He went to Jerusalem “only a few days” before the start of the feast and mingled there among the arriving crowds.
Thus it was not a period of weeks or months before the feast, but an event directly in the temporal context of the feast preparations, when the temple was already filled with merchants and pilgrims. Moreover, there was a second cleansing of the temple at the end of His ministry, shortly before His crucifixion.
Timing of the Beginning of the Ministry and the Passover Feast
»Christ began His ministry shortly before the Passover feast; however only a few days before that feast. You can read it yourself. If that is so, then the last week of the 70 [weeks] began in the spring and must also end in the spring.«
The First Temple Cleansing at the Beginning of the Ministry
»At the beginning of His ministry Christ drove out those from the temple who profaned it through their unholy trade; and His stern and godlike demeanor struck terror into the hearts of the scheming merchants. At the end of His mission He again came to the temple and found it still as profaned as before.«
Arrival in Jerusalem at the Time of the Passover Feast
»Early in His ministry Christ condemned their profane practices by His act of cleansing the temple. At the time of the Passover feast, when Jerusalem was crowded with people who had come from afar to celebrate this great annual festival, Jesus mingled with His disciples among the assembled crowd. It was early in the morning, yet large crowds were already on their way to the temple. When Jesus entered, He was outraged to find that the temple courtyard had been set up as a cattle market and a place for general commerce.«
The Purpose of the Temple Cleansing
»In the cleansing of the temple Jesus proclaimed His mission as the Messiah and began His work. [...] In the cleansing of the temple from the buyers and sellers of the world, Jesus announced His mission to cleanse the heart from the stain of sin – from earthly desires, selfish lusts, and evil habits that corrupt the soul.«
