God's justice and mercy are not opposing attributes, but they blend harmoniously through Christ's sacrifice. While justice upholds the stability of the divine government and demands holiness, mercy offers forgiveness and hope to the repentant sinner. This perfect union is fully manifested on the cross, where God demonstrates being just and, at the same time, the justifier of those who believe.
The blend of justice and mercy in salvation
»As the arch in the cloud is formed by the union of sunlight and rain, so the rainbow surrounding the throne represents the combined power of mercy and justice. It is not only justice that must be upheld; for this would eclipse the glory of the promised rainbow over the throne; man would only see the penalty of the law. If there were no justice, nor penalty, there would be no stability in God's government. It is the blend of judgment and mercy that makes salvation full and complete.«
