Ellen Gould White über: "The only thing we can do is to set the focus."
Answer
The focus of our mind must be deliberately directed toward essential truths and holy topics, rather than getting lost in a thousand insignificant things. It is our task to cultivate thoughts, control emotions, and sharpen the mind through a clear, God‑honoring purpose. By concentrating on the essential and not allowing trivialities to distract us, we bring our thinking into harmony with God.
Concentration on the Essentials
We must turn away from a thousand topics that demand our attention. There are matters that consume time and raise questions, yet lead to nothing. The highest interests require close attention and energy, which are far too often devoted to comparatively insignificant things.
An Undivided Focus for God's Honor
‘The eye is the lamp of the body: if your eye is clear, your whole body will be light.’ It says ‘your eye,’ not the eye of another person. The rich experience that is our privilege is lost when we expect someone else to see for us and guide us in our spiritual experience as if we were blind. We must have an undivided eye for God's honor, a single and persistent intention to disregard our own self and the preferences of others.
Cultivating Pure Thoughts
We need a constant awareness of the refined power of pure thoughts and the harmful influence of evil thoughts. Let us direct our thoughts toward holy things. Let them be pure and truthful, for the only security for every soul is right thinking. We should use every means that God has provided us to master and cultivate our thoughts.
Preserving Clarity in Teaching
Keep the spirit focused on a few vital points. Do not introduce unimportant ideas into your speeches. God does not want you to think you are being led by His Spirit when you stray from your topic and introduce foreign matters that have no connection to your text. By deviating from the straight line, you lose your orientation and weaken everything you have previously said.
Disciplining the Mind
In the study of the Scriptures you must train your mind to habitually, carefully, and intelligently think about biblical topics. Let your mind dwell on reconciliation, the sufferings of Christ, the character of God, the special guidance of God, and eternal life. Here are topics for thought and study that can be continued into eternity.
- Thought control and focus
- Concentration on spiritual topics
- A simple eye for God
