Ellen Gould White über: "The Message to the Church of Laodicea"
Answer
The message to the church of Laodicea is addressed to the people of God in the end times, who are in a dangerous condition of spiritual lukewarmness and self‑deception. While many believers think they are spiritually rich and lack nothing, the faithful witness reveals their true condition as poor, blind, wretched, and naked. Christ calls for sincere repentance and offers as a remedy the refined gold (faith and love), the white garment (Christ’s righteousness), and the eye salve (spiritual discernment), while He knocks at the door of the heart.
Application of the Message to the Confessing People of God
»God brings forth a people. He has a chosen people, a congregation on earth, which He has made stewards of His law. He has entrusted them with a holy treasure and eternal truth to be given to the world. He wishes to rebuke and correct them. The message to the Laodiceans is applicable to Seventh‑day Adventists who have had great light but have not walked in the light. They are those who have made a great profession but have not kept step with their Leader, and will be spat out of His mouth if they do not repent... The faithful witness says: “I advise you to buy from Me gold that has been refined in fire, so that you may become rich; and white garments, so that you may be clothed and the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye‑salve, so that you may see. Whom I love, I will correct and discipline. Therefore be diligent and repent! Behold, I stand at the door and knock: If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, to that one I will go in and share the communion with him, and he with Me.”«
The Fatal Self‑Deception About the Spiritual Condition
»The people of God are portrayed in the message to the Laodiceans as being in a state of fleshly security. They lounge in complacency and believe they are in an exalted state of spiritual achievement. “Because you say: I am rich and fully satisfied and need nothing!, and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable, poor, blind, and naked.” What greater deception can come upon the human mind than the confidence of being right when one is completely wrong! The faithful witness’s message confronts the people of God in a sad deception, even though they are sincere in this deception. They do not know that their condition is lamentable in the eyes of God... The testimony, so cutting and strict, cannot be an error, for it is the faithful witness who speaks, and His testimony must be true.«
The Nature of Lukewarmness and the True Remedy
»The Laodicean message applies to the people of God who profess to believe the present truth. The majority are lukewarm confessors who have a name but no zeal... The only hope for the Laodiceans is a clear view of their standing before God, an understanding of the nature of their disease. They are neither cold nor hot; they take a neutral stance and simultaneously flatter themselves that they need nothing. The faithful witness hates this lukewarmness. He detests the indifference of this class of people... Faith and love are the true riches, the pure gold which the faithful witness advises the lukewarm to purchase. No matter how rich we may be in earthly treasures, all our wealth will not enable us to buy the precious remedies that heal the soul’s disease called lukewarmness.«
The Significance of Gold, White Garment, and Eye Salve
»Those who accept the given message will heed the faithful witness’s counsel to the Laodiceans and purchase the gold, which is faith and love; the white garment, which is Christ’s righteousness; and the eye‑salve, which is spiritual discernment. Christ says: “Whom I love, I will correct and discipline: Be diligent and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock: If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, to that one I will go in and share the communion with him, and he with Me.” ... If the congregation refuses to hear the voice of the heavenly merchant and refuses to open the door, then Christ will pass by, and they will be deprived of His presence, deprived of the true riches, while they speak in self‑righteousness: “I am rich and fully satisfied and need nothing.”«
Call to Awakening and Zealous Repentance
»This message must be delivered to a lukewarm congregation of God’s servants. It must rouse His people from their complacency and dangerous deception regarding their true standing before God. This testimony, when accepted, will spur action, lead to self‑humiliation and confession of sins... The people of God must see their wrongdoing and awaken to zealous repentance, laying aside the sins that have brought them into such a lamentable state of poverty, blindness, wretchedness, and dreadful deception. I have been shown that the clear testimony must be alive in the congregation. This alone will correspond to the message to the Laodiceans. Wrongdoing must be rebuked, sin must be called sin, and injustice must be met swiftly and decisively and be removed by us as a people.«
Purpose of the Message to Prepare for the Loud Call
»I have been shown that the testimony to the Laodiceans applies to the people of God in the present age, and the reason it has not accomplished a greater work lies in the hardness of their hearts... It is intended to rouse the people of God, bring their apostasy before them, and lead them to zealous repentance, so that they may be favored with the presence of Jesus and equipped for the loud call of the third angel. When this message touched the heart, it led to deep humility before God... Had the faithful witness’s counsel been fully observed, God would have worked with greater power for His people.«
