Adventistische Schriften über: "The holy place in the end‑time prophecy (Matthew 24:15)"
Answer
The prophecy of Jesus in Matthew 24:15 has a dual meaning that encompasses both the destruction of Jerusalem and the events at the end of the age. In its historical fulfillment, the placing of the Roman standards on “holy ground” before the city walls was the announced sign to flee. For the end times this apostasy serves as a pattern: when the civil authority enforces religious commandments (such as the papal Sabbath decree), this is regarded as the signal for God’s people to leave the cities and seek refuge in isolated places.
The dual meaning of the prophecy
»The prophecy that He uttered was dual in its significance: while it predicted the destruction of Jerusalem, it also foreshadowed the terrors of the final great day. [...] Jesus explained to the listening disciples the judgments that would break upon the apostate Israel... Unmistakable signs would precede the dreadful climax. [...] The Savior warned His followers: "When you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader take note!), then those in Judea should flee to the mountains." If the idolatrous standards of the Romans were set up on holy ground that extended a few stadia beyond the city walls, then Christ’s followers should seek safety in flight.«
The sign for the end times
»Just as the siege of Jerusalem by the Roman armies was the signal to flee for the Christians in Judea, so the presumptuous exercise of power by our nation through the decree that enforces the papal Sabbath will be a warning for us. It will then be time to leave the great cities, as preparation also to abandon the smaller towns for remote homes in isolated mountain regions.«
Apostasy as a signal of the approaching end
»If Protestantism stretches its hand over the abyss to grasp the hand of Roman power... if our nation, under the influence of this triple alliance, denies every principle of its constitution as a Protestant and republican government... then we can know that the time for Satan’s marvelous work has come and that the end is near. Just as the approach of the Roman armies was a sign to the disciples of the impending destruction of Jerusalem, so this apostasy can be a sign for us that the limit of God’s forbearance has been reached.«
