Adventistische Schriften über: "The historical figure Melchizedek in the Old Testament"

Answer

Melchizedek was a historical figure of the Old Testament who, as king of Salem and priest of the Most High God, combined royal and priestly functions simultaneously. He met Abraham after his military victory, blessed him and brought bread and wine for strengthening, after which Abraham gave him the tenth. His priesthood was in an order that was superior to the Levitical order and serves as a pattern for Christ, who is also called a priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Melchizedek meets Abraham

»Another who met the victorious forefather to welcome him was Melchizedek, the king of Salem, who brought bread and wine to refresh his army. As “priest of the Most High God” he pronounced a blessing over Abraham and thanked the Lord who, through his servant, had wrought such a great deliverance. And Abraham “gave him the tenth of all”.«

Melchizedek acknowledges Jehovah

»Melchizedek, in giving the blessing to Abraham, recognized Jehovah as the source of his strength and the author of the victory: “Blessed be Abram of the Most High God, who possesses heaven and earth; and blessed be the Most High God, who has given your enemies into your hand.”«

Union of Kingly and Priestly Office

»In this great man the royal and priestly duties were united. He was not a priest of the Most High God to offer sacrifices or intercede: everything reported of him as priest is that “he blessed him who had the promises.” In this he is a model of the One who “will appear a second time without sin (a sin‑offering) for salvation”.«

The Order of Melchizedek

»There were two orders of priesthood, the Melchizedek order and the Levitical order. The Melchizedek order preceded the Levitical order. In Abraham’s time the priest Melchizedek was king of Salem as well as priest of the Most High God. Although the Bible says little about the Melchizedek priesthood, it was superior to the Levitical order, for Christ was made a priest after the order of Melchizedek.«

Why I built EGW Vision

Hello, I am Stephan Krol. I started this Ellen White website to make the writings of Ellen G. White and the Adventist pioneers easier to access for everyone.

EGW Vision helps you find topics, statements, and quotes faster, especially when many original sources are not yet fully available in your language. The tool searches semantically, groups relevant content by topic, and presents matching results as clearly as possible in your language.

My hope is that this tool supports personal Bible study, strengthens trust in the original sources, and helps more people discover the message of these writings with clarity, depth, and joy.
