Adventistische Schriften über: "The historic crossing under Joshua"
Answer
The historic crossing of the Jordan under Joshua was a divine miracle, comparable to the passage through the Red Sea. Since the river flooded during the spring season and its banks were inundated, a crossing by one's own power was impossible, so God held back the water while the Ark of the Covenant stood in the riverbed. This event was to confirm Joshua before all of Israel and caused the surrounding Canaanite peoples great terror.
A supernatural crossing under God's guidance
Many who as children had crossed the Red Sea now passed through a similar miracle over the Jordan, seasoned warriors, equipped for battle. After the entire army of Israel had crossed, Joshua commanded the priests to come up from the river. When they, bearing the Ark of the Covenant, stood safely on the far shore, God removed His mighty hand, and the held-back waters rushed down like a massive cataract into the natural bed of the stream.
The Israelites were still encamped on the east side of the Jordan, which was the first obstacle to the occupation of Canaan. "Get ready," had been God's first message to Joshua, "cross this Jordan, you and this whole people, into the land that I will give them." No instruction was given as to how they should make the crossing. However, Joshua knew that God would provide a way to carry out everything He commands.
God wanted Israel's crossing over the Jordan to be a miracle. Joshua, on divine instruction, commanded the people to sanctify themselves; they had to lay aside their sins and cleanse themselves of all external impurity; "for tomorrow," he said, "the Lord will work a miracle among you." The "Ark of the Covenant" was to go ahead of the army. When they saw the sign of Jehovah’s presence, carried by the priests... then they should break from their place and follow it.
When all the kings of the Amorites and the kings of the Canaanites heard that the Lord had held back the waters of the Jordan before the children of Israel, their hearts melted with fear... their marvelous crossing over the swollen and turbulent Jordan filled them with great terror.
Remember this: They came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and the commander of the Lord’s army appeared with a drawn sword in His hand. And the Lord said to Joshua: "Today I have removed the shame of Egypt from you." With the Ark of the Ten Commandments they circled the walls of Jericho for seven days.
