What does Ellen White write about...

Adventistische Schriften über: "The deeper spiritual meaning of the lukewarm church of Laodicea in Revelation 3:14–22: self-deception, spiritual pride, righteousness by faith, gold refined in the fire, white garments, eye salve, Christ’s reproof and invitation to open the door, and practical application for the church and individuals."

Answer

Laodicea’s lukewarmness is evident in spiritual self-deception: the church considers itself rich and in need of nothing, yet fails to recognize its poverty. The gold refined in the fire represents tested faith and love, the white garments represent Christ’s righteousness, and the eye salve represents spiritual discernment. These gifts come from Christ and are not earned by one’s own merits; they are received through faith and humble obedience. Christ’s rebuke calls for repentance, and his knocking invites fellowship with him: individuals and the church should allow themselves to be examined and seek revival and renewal through the Holy Spirit.

Self-Deception and Accepting Reproof

»They continue to declare that they are rich and have need of nothing. […] But these murmurers should examine their hearts and compare their lives with the practical teachings of the Bible; they should humble themselves before God and let the grace of God illuminate the darkness. Then the scales will fall from their eyes, and they will recognize their true spiritual poverty and misery. […] I was shown that the chief reason why God’s people are now in this state of spiritual blindness is that they are unwilling to accept reproof.«

Gold, White Garments, and Eye Salve

»The gold refined in the fire recommended here is faith and love. It makes the heart rich; for it has been refined until it is pure, and the more it is tested, the brighter it shines. The white garment is purity of character, the righteousness of Christ imparted to the sinner. It is indeed a garment of heavenly fabric that can be purchased only from Christ for a life of willing obedience. The eye salve is that wisdom and grace which enables us to distinguish between evil and good and to recognize sin under every disguise.«

Grace Through Faith Rather Than Personal Merit

»Some may say that expecting God’s favor on the basis of good works means exalting one’s own merits. Certainly, we cannot buy a single victory by our good works; nevertheless, without them we cannot be victors. The purchase Christ recommends to us consists solely in fulfilling the conditions he has given us. True grace, which is of inestimable value and will withstand the test of trial and adversity, is obtained only through faith and humble, prayerful obedience.«

Christ Knocks at the Door

»A religion of vanity, words without vitality, a character without moral strength—these are pointed out in the solemn message that the faithful Witness addresses to the churches, warning against pride, worldliness, formalism, and self-sufficiency. To the one who says, “I am rich, have abundance, and need nothing,” the Lord of heaven declares: You “do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.” But to the humble, suffering, faithful, and patient, who are aware of their weakness and inadequacy, words of encouragement are given: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with me.”«

Practical Renewal of the Church

»God calls for spiritual revival and spiritual renewal. […] Revival means a renewal of spiritual life, a quickening of the powers of mind and heart, a resurrection from spiritual death. Renewal means a reorganization, a change in ideas and views, habits and practices. Renewal will not bring forth the good fruit of righteousness unless it is connected with revival by the Spirit.«
