Adventistische Schriften über: "The biblical practice of mutual admonition"
Answer
The biblical practice of mutual admonition follows a clear pattern given by Christ: First one should seek the erring brother alone and privately, only if he refuses bring two or three witnesses, and as a final step inform the congregation. Admonition must always be done in the spirit of meekness, humility, and love, while examining oneself so as not to be tempted oneself. One's own faults must be corrected first before correcting others, and slander and a critical spirit are to be condemned as works of Satan.
The goal is always the restoration of the erring one, not his condemnation.
The biblical way of correction
»Servants and church members displease God when they allow individuals to tell them the faults and transgressions of their brothers. They should not listen to these reports, but ask: “Have you precisely followed the instructions of your Redeemer? Have you gone to the offender and told him his faults privately? And did he refuse to listen to you? Have you carefully and in prayer taken two or three others and worked with him in meekness, humility, and gentleness, while your heart beat for his soul?” If the captain's orders in the rules for the erring have been precisely followed, then another step is to be taken – tell it to the congregation, and let action be taken in accordance with the Scriptures.«
Restoration in the spirit of meekness
»Brothers, when a person is surprised by a misstep, restore him, you clergy, in the spirit of meekness; and in doing so examine yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.«
Direct address instead of gossip
»When sin in a brother is evident, do not speak it to another, but tell him with love for the brother's soul, with a heart full of compassion, with inner mercy the wrongdoing, then entrust the matter to him and the Lord. You have fulfilled your duty. You are not called to render judgment.«
Mutual subordination and readiness to correct
»The congregation must be subordinate to one another, ready to be advised, corrected, and guided by the congregation. The loving self is the most stubborn opponent that the follower of Jesus has to fight. There must be humility and long‑suffering in the congregation. The self must be overcome.«
Avoidance of slander and a critical spirit
»In every congregation a serious effort should be made to eliminate slander and a critical spirit as among the sins that produce the greatest evils in the church. Strictness and fault‑finding must be condemned as the work of Satan. Mutual love and trust must be encouraged and strengthened among the church members.«
