Stephen was stoned because he boldly proclaimed the gospel of Jesus Christ and his crucifixion and called the Jewish leaders “traitors and murderers” of the Righteous One. His accusation that they constantly resisted the Holy Spirit as their fathers had done, filled the priests and council members with such great anger that they violently drove him out of the city. The final trigger for the stoning was his vision of the opened heavens and the Son of God, which was unbearable for his persecutors.
