Adventistische Schriften über: "Spiritual Leadership and Pastoral Care in the Church"

Answer

Spiritual leadership and pastoral care go far beyond mere preaching and require personal commitment to understand the needs, concerns, and trials of congregation members. Pastors are to act as faithful shepherds, feeding God's flock with the bread of life, acting not dictatorially but encouragingly and upliftingly. The congregation also bears the responsibility to care for new believers and strengthen them through prayer and wise instruction in the faith.

The Character of a Faithful Shepherd

»Those who assume the position of shepherds should exercise vigilant care over the Lord's flock. This should not be a dictatorial vigilance, but one that tends to encourage, strengthen, and uplift. Ministry means more than delivering sermons; it means serious, personal work. The earthly congregation consists of wandering men and women who require patient, diligent effort so that they may be taught and disciplined to work acceptably in this life and be crowned with glory and imperishability in the life to come. Faithful pastors—shepherds—are needed who neither flatter God's people nor treat them harshly, but feed them with the bread of life—men who daily feel the transforming power of the Holy Spirit in their lives and harbor a strong, selfless love for those they serve.«

Personal Pastoral Care as a Priority

»The spirit of the true shepherd is one of self‑forgetfulness. He loses himself from view so that he may work God's works. Through proclaiming the word and personal service in people's homes, he learns their needs, concerns, and trials; and by working together with the great burden‑bearer, he shares their distress, comforts their need, satisfies their soul hunger, and wins their hearts for God. In this work the servant is accompanied by the angels of heaven, and he himself is taught and illuminated in truth, which makes one wise toward blessedness.«

The Responsibility of the Congregation

»Preaching is a small part of the work that must be done for the salvation of souls. God's spirit convicts sinners of the truth, and He places them into the arms of the congregation. Preachers may do their part, but they can never perform the work that the congregation should. God requires His congregation to care for those who are young in faith and experience, to go to them not for the purpose of gossip, but to pray, to speak to them words that are "like golden apples in silver bowls.«

Pastors as Spiritual Doctors

»One who isolates himself from people is unable to help them. A skillful doctor must understand the nature of various diseases and possess a thorough knowledge of the human body. He must be prompt in treating patients. He knows that delays are dangerous. When his experienced hand is placed on the pulse of the suffering and he carefully notes the particular signs of the ailment, his prior knowledge enables him to determine the type of disease and the necessary treatment to halt its progress. Just as a doctor deals with physical illness, the pastor serves the sin‑sick soul. And his work is all the more important than the former's, just as eternal life is more valuable than temporal existence. The pastor encounters an endless variety of temperaments; and it is his duty to become acquainted with the members of families who listen to his teachings, in order to determine which means best influence them in the right direction.«

Dangers of Human Autonomy

»God has placed men with various talents in the congregation as His appointed helpers, so that through the combined wisdom of many the sense of the Spirit can be fulfilled. Men who act in accordance with their own strong character traits and refuse to join with others who have long experience in God's work become blinded by self‑confidence and unable to distinguish between falsehood and truth. It is not safe to choose such persons as leaders in the congregation; for they would follow their own judgment and plans, regardless of the judgment of their brothers. It is easy for the enemy to work through those who, although they need counsel at every step, assume guardianship over souls in their own strength, without having learned the humility of Christ.«

Adapting to Individual Needs

»Everyone has his work. Paul said to Timothy: "Pay attention to yourself and to the doctrine; persevere, for if you do so, you will save yourself and those who hear you." The servants of Jesus Christ will have more than a fleeting interest in people. They will strive to discern the condition of their spiritual being, just as a doctor seeks to understand the physical difficulties of his patients. They will engage in personal conversations and tailor their counsel to each individual according to the soul's needs. This personal work cannot be considered of secondary importance. The preacher is the appointed shepherd of God's flock, and it is his task to serve the sin‑sick, the tempted, and the wandering.«
